    XMPP Server Migration Announcement

    Hello Macaws!

It's with a mix of excitement and anticipation that I bring you this important news. We are in the process of migrating to a substantially more powerful server that will enable us to explore new horizons in communications.

    Server Location Update

For some of you, this might be less-than-ideal news as our new server is located in France. However, as someone who has been using it since its launch from various parts of Europe, Asia, and South America, I can confidently assure you that you'll likely not notice any significant difference in performance.

That said, I offer my sincere apologies if our North American server location was a primary factor in your decision to join us, and if this relocation presents a dealbreaker. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.

    Weekend Migration Schedule

The second important part of this announcement is that I'm planning to move our XMPP server to the new infrastructure this weekend 24-25 of May, 2025. While everything should proceed smoothly, please be aware that some outages may occur during this period. I apologize in advance and promise to do everything possible to ensure a seamless transition.

One change you will definitely notice is a certificate update – please don't be alarmed when you see this, as it's an unavoidable part of the process.

    Benefits of Our New Nest

    This transition brings numerous advantages:

    • Significantly improved connectivity
    • Faster message processing
    • Lower latency
    • Enhanced security measures
    • More robust backup systems to protect against potential disasters (which we've fortunately avoided so far)
    • A solid foundation for future experiments and improvements

I'm also planning to increase rate limits and storage quotas. With some technical wizardry, I hope to potentially eliminate storage quotas entirely and dramatically increase maximum upload sizes.

I deeply appreciate your understanding during this transition and apologize for any inconvenience these changes may cause. If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Thank you for continuing to soar with us!

Server Updates: Forgejo Migration and updates

      Blue • news.macaw.me / macaw-me • 30 April, 2025 edit • 1 minute

Good news, macaws! We've successfully migrated from Gitea to Forgejo 🎉

Forgejo is a community-driven fork of Gitea that focuses on transparency, openness, and long-term sustainability.
It brings active development and a strong commitment to user freedom — and in the future, it may introduce Git repository federation, allowing true cross-instance collaboration. Stay tuned for that!

Everything should continue working just as before — same repositories, same web interface, same features.

⚠️ Action Required: Update Your SSH Config and Remotes

If you used SSH with the gitea user, you must update your repository remotes and SSH configuration.

    Old-style remote:

        git@git.macaw.me:author/project.git

    Or in your `~/.ssh/config`:

        Host git.macaw.me
            User gitea
            IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_yourkey

    New-style (correct):

        forgejo@git.macaw.me:author/project.git

    And update your config:

        Host git.macaw.me
            User forgejo
            IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_yourkey

    To update a local repo:

    git remote set-url origin forgejo@git.macaw.me:author/project.git

Without this change, you may run into connection issues when pushing or pulling.

    💬 Movim Webchat Updated

We’ve also upgraded our Movim instance — the web-based XMPP chat and social platform.
The new version brings a cleaner interface, better performance, and improved mobile support.

If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s the perfect time.

    🚀 More Improvements Incoming

This update is just the beginning.
We’re continuing to tune performance, expand federation features, and strengthen our infrastructure.

Thanks for sticking with macaw.me. You make this space worth hosting. 🦜

      Happy new year!

      Blue • news.macaw.me / macaw-me • 6 January, 2025 • 1 minute

    Merry Christmas, everyone!

What a year it has been! Our community has grown in both size and spirit, and I’m incredibly grateful to all of you for making it such a wonderful place. Together, we’ve built something special—so thank you for being part of this journey!

I’ve got a few important updates to share:

    • All Services Updated
Everything’s running smoothly after our latest round of updates, so you can enjoy the improved features without any hiccups.
    • Public Registration Changes
Unfortunately, we’ve had to close public registration for Git and XMPP due to a recent wave of spam attacks. This was a tough decision, but it helps protect our network and the community we’ve worked so hard to grow. If you’d like an account, please feel free to reach out to me directly—friends and family are still more than welcome, even if we’re now a “closed club.”
    • New Movim Features
Movim has rolled out exciting additions like “Briefs” for microblogging (à la Mastodon or Twitter) and “Stories” for those who enjoy sharing content in a fun, ephemeral way.

I have plenty more improvements and plans on the horizon, but it’s still a bit early to spill all the details. Stay tuned—I can’t wait to share what’s next!

Wishing you a fantastic holiday season and an amazing year ahead. Here’s to our ever-growing community—may we continue to thrive, learn, and have fun together!

      Mail spam detection settings

      Blue • news.macaw.me / macaw-me • 15 July, 2023

With great help of a friend I happened to finally configure the #mail server the way it was supposed to be configured from the start: messages that are marked by #spamassassin as spam now will be automatically moved to a spam folder! Also I hardened a bit #spamassassin configuration, theoretically it should protect you from spam in a better manner, but if it filters too much - please let me know, we'll find a solution together!
