Server Updates: Forgejo Migration and updates

      Blue • news.macaw.me / macaw-me • 30 April, 2025 edit • 1 minute

Good news, macaws! We've successfully migrated from Gitea to Forgejo 🎉

Forgejo is a community-driven fork of Gitea that focuses on transparency, openness, and long-term sustainability.
It brings active development and a strong commitment to user freedom — and in the future, it may introduce Git repository federation, allowing true cross-instance collaboration. Stay tuned for that!

Everything should continue working just as before — same repositories, same web interface, same features.

⚠️ Action Required: Update Your SSH Config and Remotes

If you used SSH with the gitea user, you must update your repository remotes and SSH configuration.

    Old-style remote:

        git@git.macaw.me:author/project.git

    Or in your `~/.ssh/config`:

        Host git.macaw.me
            User gitea
            IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_yourkey

    New-style (correct):

        forgejo@git.macaw.me:author/project.git

    And update your config:

        Host git.macaw.me
            User forgejo
            IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_yourkey

    To update a local repo:

    git remote set-url origin forgejo@git.macaw.me:author/project.git

Without this change, you may run into connection issues when pushing or pulling.

    💬 Movim Webchat Updated

We’ve also upgraded our Movim instance — the web-based XMPP chat and social platform.
The new version brings a cleaner interface, better performance, and improved mobile support.

If you haven’t tried it yet, now’s the perfect time.

    🚀 More Improvements Incoming

This update is just the beginning.
We’re continuing to tune performance, expand federation features, and strengthen our infrastructure.

Thanks for sticking with macaw.me. You make this space worth hosting. 🦜
