Apple readies AI for iPhone, Mac, iPad

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 11 June, 2024 edit

Billed as “AI for the rest of us,” Apple’s newly launched Apple Intelligence system will serve as a “personal intelligence system” for iPhone, Mac, and iPad.

Announced June 10 and due in beta this fall, Apple Intelligence puts powerful generative AI models at the core of the three key Apple platforms, harnessing the power of Apple silicon to understand language, create images, take action across apps, and draw on personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. The technology unlocks ways for users to enhance writing and communicate more effectivity, Apple said.

Solving the data quality problem in generative AI

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 11 June, 2024 edit

The potential of generative AI has captivated both businesses and consumers alike, but growing concerns around issues like privacy, accuracy, and bias have prompted a burning question: What are we feeding these models?

The current supply of public data has been adequate to produce high-quality general purpose models, but is not enough to fuel the specialized models enterprises need. Meanwhile, emerging AI regulations are making it harder to safely handle and process raw sensitive data within the private domain. Developers need richer, more sustainable data sources—the reason many leading tech companies are turning to synthetic data.

A CISO game plan for cloud security

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 11 June, 2024 edit

As businesses increasingly migrate to the cloud, chief information security officers (CISOs) face numerous critical challenges in ensuring robust cloud security. Don’t believe me? Experts highlighted this at the recent Gartner Security & Risk Management Summit. Gartner projects a significant 24% increase in spending on cloud security, positioning it as the fastest-growing segment within the global security and risk management market.

    Adapt, adjust, execute

The bottom line is that shifting to cloud computing necessitates fundamentally rethinking security. Organizations strive to integrate the cloud into standard business operations, however, this transition has more pitfalls than most CISOs understand. I’ve seen this in my research and my experience as a consultant for 20 years, cloud and prior.

Social media would be better on a blockchain

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 11 June, 2024 edit

In a past column , I talked about how the fat cats of social media profit from all of the value that normal folks like you and I provide. Social media sites have complete control over the attention-creating value that we provide for them, and give us little to no say over how that content is managed. They can even take away access to our profiles. All the money generated by our work ends up in their coffers.

I mentioned Substack as a place with low take rates, and how content producers there are able to benefit much more directly from the value that they create because they use a common protocol—email—that is not controlled by any corporate entity.

C++ language rises in Tiobe popularity index

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 10 June, 2024 edit

Developers apparently did not listen to a recent White House advisory to move away from C++ and C over memory safety concerns , as C++ has climbed to second place in the Tiobe index of programming language popularity, trailing only Python . The C language dropped to third place.

C++ is the number two language in the Tiobe Programming Community Index for June , while C’s third place ranking is its lowest position ever in the index. C++ was third last month while C was in second place .

11 surprising ways developers are using Wasm

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 10 June, 2024 edit

When the browser began, it was just a window for displaying some text and maybe a few images. It was just a new way to distribute the same kind of documents that you might find on a coffee table, like magazines or books.

Java , JavaScript , and CSS changed all that. Just adding a bit of Turing-complete functionality was all it took, and clever programmers found ways to duplicate word processors, games, and more inside what once was a container for words and pictures sitting still.

Kubernetes shows the way forward for AI

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 10 June, 2024 edit

The term “inflection point” is overused, but it certainly applies to the current state of artificial intelligence. Technology providers—and the companies that depend on them—can choose one of two roads to AI development: proprietary or open source. This dichotomy has existed for decades, with both sides achieving great levels of success. However, I would argue that the stakes for AI are higher than we’ve ever seen, and that the open source model is critical for the productive, economically feasible, and safe productization and consumption of AI.

We need a Red Hat for AI

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 10 June, 2024 edit

Everyone is doing AI, but no one knows why. That’s an overstatement, of course, but it feels like the market has hit peak hype without peak productivity. As Monte Carlo CEO Barr Moses highlights from a recent Wakefield survey, 91% of data leaders are building AI applications, but two-thirds of that same group said they don’t trust their data to large language models (LLMs). In other words, they’re building AI on sand.

To be successful, we need to move beyond the confusing hype and help enterprises make sense of AI. In other words, we need more trust (open models) and fewer moving parts (opinionated platforms that require guesswork to choose and apply models).

TypeScript adds support for ECMAScript’s Set methods

      pubsub.slavino.sk / infoworldcom • 7 June, 2024 edit

TypeScript 5.5, the latest version of Microsoft’s strongly typed JavaScript variant , has graduated to a release candidate (RC) stage. The update, which brings improvements ranging from performance and size optimizations to regular expression checking, recently added support for ECMAScript’s new Set methods.

The TypeScript 5.5 release candidate was introduced June 6 and can be accessed through Nuget or the following command: npm -D typescript@rc . A beta release was introduced April 25 and the final release is planned for June 18.
